As I sit here, watching the William & Catherine Story: A Royal Romance, I can’t help thinking how different their life is from mine. Oh to live the life of a royal—the glitz, the glamor, the magnificence of it all. Then I realized, just as I have my ups and downs, I’m sure they have their own. We all know the saying “life is like a box of chocolate.” Well, it really is. Life is an assortment of good times and bad times, sweet moments and moments that leave you feeling bitter. But the beauty of it all is that these ‘treats’ lead to an awesome box of chocolate….aka life.
Today marks two weeks since my surgery—my fourth and hopefully last leg surgery. In all seriousness, I can’t handle any more broken legs. Although these surgeries really ‘sucked’ (that’s putting it lightly), I wouldn’t change these experiences for the world. Through the hard-work and the pain, and the muscle spasms, I learned strength. I learned perseverance. I learned humility and gained understanding of those who struggle with disability every day. I can truly say that because of these struggles, I am better.
So at times, I may sulk and say: why me, why my legs, how come I couldn’t be Kate Middleton and have perfect legs and marry a handsome prince?! Then I remember, I’m Maya. And although my life may be drastically different than Kate Middleton’s, I have a life that is GOOD! I have a family that loves me, great friends, and legs that will eventually allow me to run into a bright future. Most importantly, I have a God who has been with me every day of my life. I know everything that I’ve been through, is because He has something magnificent in store for me. I thank Him each day for my ‘Box of Chocolate’. Life is too short to not enjoy every piece that is given to us!
All the best <3
Hello Maya, I was blessed by your perspective. It is so easy to compare our lives to others and complain about the difficulties that we have to endure. But when we are in Christ, none of our hardships are wasted. He redeems them all and teaches us so much in the process. At the end of it all, we look more like Him! Continue to be encouraged!
