Ooh Kanye…

Did you watch the 2015 Grammy Awards this past Sunday? The night was filled with performances by the hottest music artist of 2014-15. The Lonely Hour singer—Sam Smith—had a huge night wining (count them) 1…2….3…4 awards, one of them being for Record of the Year. The competition was high for nominees of the prestigious Album of the Year award, as they are all at the top of their game in the music industry. Here’s who was nominated:

While I’m partial to Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran (I love their music), any one of these artist were deserving of the win. However, there could only be one winner, and the award went to alternative rock artist Beck. Some of you may be asking, who in the world is Beck? Quite honestly, I can’t say that I know his music. Yes, I’ve heard of him, but I can’t name a song of his like I can Ed Sheeran or Pharrell Williams. However, Beck has been active in the music industry since the early 1990’s. He has over 20 years of experience, and the fact that he has managed to stay relevant in the industry is a win in its own right. With any award, there can only be one winner, and in this case there were four “losers”; however, all the nominees have “caught the brass ring”, as George Clooney so eloquently stated during his 2015 Golden Globes speech. Every one of the nominees worked hard, and deserved to be recognized for their achievements. There were no ‘sore-losers’, well except for one…….Kanye West. Of course it had to be him, and he wasn’t even nominated!

We all remember how Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift during her 2009 award speech at the MTV Music Video Awards. He strongly felt that Beyonce should have won the award for her song Single Ladies. So what did he do? He walked onto the stage and snatched the microphone right from Taylor Swift’s hands. How rude. We all held our breathes last Sunday as Kayne West once again walked onto the stage, this time during Beck’s speech for best album. And to our relief, as fast as Kanye walked onto the stage, he walked off in what seemed to be a joke, reliving his infamous Taylor Swift fiasco….or so we thought. The joke is actually on us, as Kanye West states that this was no joking matter. He was serious, still believing Beyonce is the best artist of all time. Check out his rant on how Beyonce, a “real artist”, should have won the award and not Beck:

Really Kanye?! First, who are you!? Just because you don’t follow a particular artist, or a type of music, does not mean that no one else does. Now, I’m not a big follower of ‪#‎Beck‬….nor am I of ‪#‎Beyonce‬, but who are you to say whether or not Beck is a “real artist” and worthy of an award?

The irony in this is that Kanye West is demanding respect be given to “real artist”, a category in which I assume he includes himself. *rolls eyes*  Yet, it is with his actions that all respect for Kanye is loss…as an artist and as a person. In order to demand respect, it has to be given.

So once again, Kanye West stole the moment at an award show. I guess we shouldn’t expect anything less from him. Still, I find myself scratching my head wondering, who died and made him Jesus….or should I say Yeezus?
