I used to be that girl. Teased and picked on. My confidence and self-esteem really took a hit, and I found myself struggling with body image issues that have lasting affects on my life today.
The saying goes, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” The truth is, words do hurt. Words are power. Words have the power to leave us feeling damaged and scarred. Especially when it is our own words that do the hurting. However I’ve learned — especially now as I continue this crazy journey of body positivity — that just as words have the power to harm us, they have the power to heal and uplift.
5 years ago, I never thought I’d be taking pictures and sharing it with thousands of people for a living. Like, it’s ridiculous. It wasn’t too long ago that I hated taking pictures all together. They say pictures are worth a thousand words? Well, each of my pictures were of an insecure girl who was uncomfortable in her body. You’ve seen my yearbook pictures…yikes. It came to a point where enough is enough. I couldn’t continue along the same track of feeling bad about myself. I had to do something different. I forced myself to take pictures, and actually print them. I would then hang these pictures in various places of my home — on the bathroom mirror, the refrigerator door, the closet — but not before adding a body positive message on each photo.
I can truly say that this process of positive affirmation, taking pictures and speaking words of love to myself, has been the catalyst of change in my life. That’s what I want for you as well. There are multiple ways that we can encourage ourselves, however, this for me, has been the most rewarding — you can physically see how the love you gain for yourself manifests in your pictures.
Drum roll please *drum roll*. Thanks to my friends at HP, I am able to provide five readers with a free HP Sprocket Printer! Amazing right? These printers will be given away at random to those living in the US only. All you have to do is apply using the form below.
Remember, we have the power to reinvent our minds, by reinventing our words. I encourage you to try this experiment out for yourself, take plenty of pictures! I would love to feature your pics on my Positively Me Wall on The Pink Caboodle. To be featured, post your pics on Instagram or Twitter using #SpeakPositivelyMe, then check here to see everyone’s photos of affirmation.
