The Standard of Beauty?

In a media driven society, the idea of the American ‘standard of beauty’ can be hard to live up to. Google ‘beautiful women’ and what do you see? Here’s a sample below:

Not that these women aren’t pretty…they’re gorgeous…but is this it? As a black woman, I don’t look like any of these girls…am I not beautiful? Furthermore, all almost all of these women have been photoshopped in some way, shape, or form (except for Scarlet Johansson…she’s perfect). So ladies, don’t believe the hype. Stop trying to live up to the standard of beauty and find the beauty that is in you. Beauty is much more than what you typically see in the magazines.

Don’t put makeup on because you feel like it’s necessary. Put makeup on simply because you love makeup, and you enjoy trying different looks.

Be proud and recognize that you are beautiful as you are — regardless of your skin color or body shape, etc.

Every morning (once you’re awake), I want you to look at yourself in the mirror and say, “I am beautiful” TEN times. You may not believe it at first. But with time, you will look at your ‘flaws’ as pieces of a masterpiece…because that’s exactly what they are.

Until next time,
